Part 6: Official Opening and Initial Sales

Hello there! I'm Hari, a business student in grade 11 (I agree that I am running out of creative introductions... help!) If you have followed the blog till this post, you are ready to officially open your business. Yay! Confetti! If you haven't, begin here.

But - there's always the big 'but' - here are some things you need to remember before and when you are opening your business. This short post will discuss the same with you.

Plan for the Big Day

As you might have noticed, the entire process of starting a business relies on rigorous planning. So, needless to say, you need a plan for the opening day of your business too. Now, unlike conventional planning, this one requires a different approach, a different focus. Your primary aim is to maximise initial sales by attracting a large number of people. Now, there isn't a "most effective way" to do this, but I will surely list out the different approaches you can take.

Build Hype

If you aren't aware of this term,  it basically means to extensively promote your brand to the people. But how? Flyers have proven to be the best way to present visual content to a mass audience. Take a look at this:

What are your first thoughts? Doesn't it catch your attention at first glance?

As you can see, the flyer can convey so much information at one look. The bold title makes it very clear that the fact that your business is opening officially. The subtitle catches the attention of the readers because it speaks about a discount.

Advertise, don't Spam

There is a clear line of difference between advertising and spamming a person. Excessive advertising can put off the customers, and too little advertising can cause a lack of awareness. Therefore, you must identify the goldilocks zone between these two extremes.

I sent out a new flyer every two days, and no two flyers were the same. This is something you must also try to do because the same flyer being sent over and over again would be treated as spam. Think from the perspective of the customer. Would you like to keep getting the same advertisement every day? The obvious answer is NO!

Offer an Introductory Discount

Like I said in this post, discounts tend to attract a great number of people to your business. So, a good - say 20% discount - will attract a large crowd to buy your product, thus increasing your introductory sales. However, as I keep repeating, log all this into your balance sheet. You wouldn't want to go under loss just because you wanted to up your sales.

Keep yourself afloat!

Until this post, I have given you a lot of knowledge and personal opinions regarding the best way to start and run your business. However, since what I say is either too generalised or is relevant to a specific sector of business, it is up to you to apply the knowledge shared here in a relevant manner. You wouldn't want to use ideologies meant for an ice cream business in a tech business. The results would be disastrous, trust me!

So, with that, we come to the end of another post! In the next post, we will discuss how you can continue keeping your business afloat. See you there!

Part 1: Writing a Business Plan for Your First Business

Hi, I'm Hari, a student in Grade 11.  This post is the first in a series of 9 posts.  If you have taken the time to click on this post, I take it that you are here to learn how to write a business plan for your first business. I am not going to disappoint you! I'll assume that you are a complete beginner with no knowledge about how to write such documents. Just so you know, a  business plan is written to help entrepreneurs plan for the future of their business.  Together, we will go through how to write a successful business plan, and I will also show you the one I made for my business, The iKeme Store . What is a Business Plan? A business plan is a formal document that points out the financial objectives and operations of a business.  Mind you, I used the word  formal , not  legal . It is perfectly legal to run a business without a business plan. However, running a business without a plan is like driving without deciding an end destination.  You ...

Part 3: Purchasing Equipment and Supplies for your First Business

Hello there, I am Hari, a business student in Grade 11. If you have read my previous posts, this one will take you shopping for the necessary equipment and supplies for your first business.   If you're new here and know nothing about how to start your first business, I would highly recommend you start at this post . I will assume that you (like me) are on a tight budget, and can't afford expensive equipment and supplies. I will show you how you can make an ideal purchase that doesn't dig deep into your pockets. The tips I am going to share with you can be used whenever you want to make a smart purchase. Introduction  Like I mentioned in my previous post , a business exists to satisfy the needs and wants of people. They combine resources known as the Factors of Production  to come up with either a physical product (also called goods) or an intangible service . To convert raw material into finished goods, a product undergoes what is called production. To ensure a constant s...

Part 9: The End? Key Takeaways and Experiences from this Project

Hello guys, welcome to a different type of post. Instead of boring you with information and knowledge, I will be sharing something different with you. If you are the sort of person who reads a book from the beginning, read from here . In the final post of this series, I will be sharing with you the experiences I had from my business project, The iKeme Store. First Things First Before getting to that, I want to share something I learnt from this journey: Never get disheartened if your business does not generate profits the way you expected it to. Always look at the bright side: the experiences you gained, the skills you learnt, the people you interacted with, etc. Why My Business Closed Down Before getting into that, I'd like you to know that this project spanned 2 months of effort and preparation. The iKeme Store ran for a total of 4 weeks, after which it came to a halt. There were two reasons for the closure of my business: one was my loss of interest, and the other was COVID. One...
